At the age of 14, Zhen Fei (1876 – 1900) was given the title of the most favoured concubine by the Qing Dynasty Emperor, Guang Xu. Even at such a young age, she was multi-talented and even had political ambition. However, the Empress’s Dowager, Cixi took a disliking to the young woman and imprisoned her twice. Zhen Fei committed suicide by falling into a well. She was 24 years old.
The red in the painting depicts the energy and passion of such an inspirational young woman. The blue shadow reveals the true sadness of her story.
